Yesterday...

... in case you didn't gather from my letter to myself, yesterday was a really BAD day in pregnancy-land. The truly annoying thing is that it was completely my own fault.

We went out to breakfast at this little restaurant near our house and I had coffee. I KNOW I can only drink certain coffee (DD, Starbucks and Panera... apparently those kinds are lower acid)... but I risked it anyway. And lo, it brought on an entire day of nonstop acid freakin' reflux that even two doses of the $20/bottle Zantac couldn't touch.

Even up through 5:30 this morning, I was popping Tums every hour and half in a vain attempt to make it go away. The whole thing culminated in a grand ol' pukefest around 8 this morning. I STILL haven't had anything to eat or drink other than the iced tea that initiated the pukefest, but at least the reflux has subsided.

DUMB DUMB DUMB STUPID DUMB.

Lesson learned. No more crappy diner coffee for me! Actually, the very idea of coffee of any kind makes me cringe a little right now. It's like a reverse Pavlovian thing or something. :(

Comments:
Erin have you ever been to a GI doc for your reflux? I'm a GI nurse. You should probably be on Prisolec or Nexium, but only if OK with your OB. But reflux is really serious. I don't want to scare you, but mine was untreated for a year (only Tums every night, I should have known better), and from the acid I developed a condition called Barrett's esophagus, which is a pre-cancerous
condition of the esophagus, and I
need biopsies every year. Jackie

That sucks! Your HB makes my HB seem like a walk in the park. Although, last night, I felt your pain. I woke up at 2am with terrible HB and I cried b/c I couldn't move without feeling like vomit. Yuck.

At least you only have one more trimester to go!

Jackabug,

I brought it up at my two most recent OB visits and she tells me all I can take is Zantac 150. The most recent visit, I whined and told her it's REALLY horrible and asked if I could take Prilosec or Prevacid (a pharmacy tech friend of mine recommended it) and she said no.

Honestly, the Zantac actually does a reasonably good job of controlling 9 out of 10 days... it's the days I slip up and drink or eat something bad and when it wears off in the middle of the night that it's horrible.

I have another appointment on Thursday, so I'll bring it up again and see what she says. It really is miserable... :(

Oh, man. :-( The thing is that once you're done with prego, all this goes away, right? So it's totally related? Sucky. Woah.

Oh yes... it goes away the very MINUTE the baby comes out. (i chowed down on McD's value meal an hour after Ben was born with no adverse effects!)
