Well, I Did It...

Soooo... I bought a breast pump.

After much thought and research, I ended up going with the Avent Isis Manual one. I think in the hospital, I'm going to try out their electric one if my milk comes in while I'm there. And then when I come home, I'll use the Avent to sort of test the waters of giving the baby something other than formula. If I'm not weirded out by it and it seems to be going well, I might go back and rent the electric pump from the hospital... but I thought I'd start with the smallest investment.

Plus, this one gets GREAT reviews, even from people who also love the fancy electric Medela pump. So... we'll see! I don't at all expect to be able to exclusively use breastmilk. I'm sure the baby will get formula in the hospital (I have no plans to keep the nurses from feeding Too formula in the nursery) and that will automatically mess with supply... plus, pumping in general isn't exactly the best/easiest way to maintain enough of a milk supply to feed a baby breastmilk exclusively. (I'm on a message board where the majority of moms are/were breastfeeders so I've inadvertently absorbed quite a bit of knowledge on the subject over the past three years)

But it's not something I WANT to do 100% of the time... I just wanted to give it a try... you know, since it's there and all. ;) And ummm yeah... Have you ever priced formula? That's one expense I'd like to cut down on this time around. Sheesh.

Comments:
I have the duo Isis IQ by Avent and it has done me very well!

I love Avent's stuff!! That's part of the reason I went with this one. I already have all the bottles and nipples...

I am glad you picked one! and good luck! on the subject of exclusively pumping and not a good way to maintain supply..in my case, exclusively pumping went great..I made enough, more then enough to feed her for 14 months..you just have to establish the supply just as if you were feeding a newborn..pumping every 3hrs :) and then you can skip the night time pumps as a couple weeks go on, etc
but giving it a try is great! You may decide it works for you :)

Bree, I had mostly just heard it was harder and a lot more work than if you just breastfeed... was it?

you know, since I didnt breastfeed I didnt know any different..so it was easy to me, I would have enough to store in the fridge and just warm up, or if I knew it was almost time for her to eat, I would just go pump real quick and give it fresh..pumping took about 10 min.Kyle could help me, during the day and night feeding her. If we were out and about, I would just ask for hot water to warm her bottle etc.. if it was fresh its good for many hours not refridgerated.., my sister, or grandparents could feed her too..then with easton since he was early too, I started pumping and would nurse here and there but wasnt comfortable nursing outside my home..and honestly, pumping seemed alot easier with him-mainly because I would nurse him for 10 min on each side then go pump and the whole thing felt like it took forever.when you just pump- it is just a matter of getting a routine down to get the pumping in.now with Hudson since he wasnt early, I didnt have to start pumping milk first, I just nursed him, I never thought I would love breastfeeding, or ever nurse in public.. but I am really enjoying breastfeeding and actually nurse in public! Part of me kinda wished I was pumping though, because it was so much "easier" to me..or I was just use to it for doing it so long and the bonus- I got help at night. (nursing every 2 hrs at night has been rough). I am finding it hard to get pumping in to store milk so I can leave him for a couple of hours. solely pumping was easier.. haha

If you have any other questions I can help..things like hands free pumping..(I would just get on my computer ;) and check boards, email etc)

Good choice & good plan!

I liked my Isis pump, too. And you can throw the entire thing (after taking it apart, of course) in a pot of boiling water to sterilize it as often as you like. I wish you the best of luck with your boobie juice extraction. I hope you like it. I'm sure Too will, too. It tastes like candy compared to formula and --I've said it before and I'll say it again -- makes their poops smell like Auntie Anne's pretzels.

Good choice Erin ! Just think only a couple more months!!!

I'm there with ya. If I can make my own milk I'll use it since our mortgage grew by double. ;-) Oh! And the weight loss!

Oh, yea, and all that "good for the baby" stuff, yaddayaddayaddda.

I honestly don't buy into the weight loss aspect of bf'ing. You hold onto a certain percentage of body fat when you breastfeed that you don't lose until you stop. I have friends who bf and lost the weight quickly, and others who didn't. And then were was me... I didn't bf a single day and the pg weight was gone in 13 weeks! So what's that about?! ;)
